Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about VEXpert

Subscription & Pricing

💳 How much does VEXpert cost?

VEXpert costs $4.50 per month during launch. Your subscription adds 425,000 Balance each billing period, and that Balance rolls over and accumulates as long as your subscription stays active.

🔄 What happens to unused tokens at the end of the month?

Your unused Balance rolls over. Each billing period adds another 425,000 to your Balance, and it keeps accumulating as long as your subscription remains active.

If you cancel, your access continues until the end of your current billing period. When that period ends, your subscription ends and the remaining Balance is cleared.

Can I purchase additional tokens if I run out?

Yes. You can purchase additional Balance through top-ups if you need extra capacity.

Top-ups are added to your Balance and used first. Like subscription Balance, any remaining Balance is cleared when your subscription ends.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time using the Manage subscription link in your Polar invoice email.

Your access will continue until the end of your current billing period. After that, your subscription ends and any remaining Balance is cleared.

💰 What is your refund policy?

Due to the low cost of the subscription and the computational expenses involved in providing the service, VEXpert does not offer refunds.

At $4.50 per month with no long-term commitment, we believe the pricing is accessible enough that trying the service carries minimal risk. We encourage you to make full use of the features during your subscription period.

Token Usage

🪙 How many tokens do different operations use?

Token usage varies based on the complexity of your request and the features you use. Tokens are deducted from your Balance when you use VEXpert:

Standard operations (Prompt to VEX, Refactor, Debug, Explain) 350-1,000 tokens
Deeper Reasoning mode ~10-15x more

With 425,000 tokens added to your Balance each billing period, you can perform hundreds of standard operations or dozens of advanced reasoning tasks.

🧠 When should I use Deeper Reasoning mode?

Deeper Reasoning uses approximately 10-15 times more tokens than standard mode, but provides significantly better results for complex problems. Use it when:

  • Working with complex mathematical or geometric algorithms
  • Debugging particularly tricky or convoluted code
  • Refactoring large snippets with multiple dependencies
  • You need the safest, most production-ready solution possible

For routine tasks, standard mode is more than sufficient and much more token-efficient.

📊 How can I track my token usage?

Your current token Balance is visible within the VEXpert interface. You can at any time visit the License tab on the VEXpert wrangle node, at use the validate button to get the current Balance. This updates after each query.

Licensing & Installation

💻 Can I use my license on multiple computers?

Yes! Your VEXpert license can be activated on multiple machines. All installations will share the same token pool, so you can seamlessly work across different workstations without any restrictions.

This is perfect for artists who work from home, in the studio, or on render farms.

🔐 Is my license tied to my .hip files?

No. Licensing is stored locally on your machine and never travels with .hip files. When someone else opens your scene, VEXpert will use their own license state.

This means you can share projects freely without worrying about licensing conflicts or exposing your credentials.

🔄 Can I convert VEXpert nodes to standard Houdini nodes?

Absolutely. VEXpert includes a "Convert to Native Wrangle" feature that transforms any VEXpert node into a standard Houdini Attribute Wrangle. All generated VEX code and parameters are preserved.

This ensures zero vendor lock-in — your work is always yours, in standard Houdini format.

⚠️ VEXpert isn't appearing after installation. What should I do?

If VEXpert doesn't show up in your node list after installation, try these steps:

  • Verify that both vexpert.json and the vexpert1.0-master/ folder are in your packages directory
  • Make sure you're looking in the correct Houdini version folder (e.g., houdini20.5)
  • Completely close and restart Houdini (not just the current scene)
  • Check Houdini's console for any package loading errors

🔑 My license key won't validate. What's wrong?

License validation issues are usually caused by:

  • Copy/paste errors: Make sure there are no extra spaces or line breaks in your key
  • Internet connectivity: VEXpert needs an active internet connection to validate licenses
  • Expired subscription: Check that your subscription is still active

If you continue having issues, reach out to support team with your license details, and we'll sort things out.

Technical Questions

📦 Which Houdini contexts does VEXpert support?

VEXpert v1.0 currently supports the SOP (Surface Operators) context. Support for additional contexts (DOPs, VOPs, COPs, LOPs and Volume wrangles) is planned for future releases.

🔧 Does VEXpert work with all Houdini versions?

VEXpert is tested and compatible with Houdini 19.5 and later. We recommend using the latest production build of Houdini for the best experience.

🌐 Does VEXpert require an internet connection?

Yes. VEXpert uses cloud-based AI models to generate and analyze VEX code, so an active internet connection is required for all AI-powered features. The "Convert to native Wrangle" feature is not internet depended and can be used at all times.

However, once code is generated, it runs entirely within Houdini like any other VEX snippet.

👥 Can I use VEXpert in a team/studio environment?

Yes! VEXpert is designed for both individual artists and teams. Since licenses can be activated on multiple machines and don't travel with scene files, it integrates seamlessly into collaborative pipelines.
